Crowdbutching / Crowdbutchering is a combination of the words crowdfunding and butchering. Instead of buying a specific joint of meat from a supermarket, you get to buy and share a whole cow with other people. Crowdbutching has been designed to facilitate this process online. It's a way of buying meat that ensures the whole cow is used, from nose to tail, and nothing is wasted.
Together with a group of online friends and strangers, you purchase a cow share in the form of a meat box. Your cow is only slaughtered once 100% of its meat has been sold; nothing is wasted. Crowdbutching is our plan to make high quality, traceable meat available to everybody. We want to be transparent, so that you can see exactly how your meat reaches your plate.
Every day we add one or two new cows to our website. Every time someone purchases a meat box, their cow ‘fills up’ by about 3%. When a cow reaches 100% it becomes fully sold, at which point it will be transported to the artisan butcher. We let the carcass mature for two weeks before it is divided up and your share of beef is delivered to your home, via refrigerated transport.
Stress is not only bad for an animal’s well-being, it also impacts meat quality. If a cow experiences stress either before or during slaughter, the meat will be less tender and will lack flavour. That’s why, when our cows are moved from the farm to our artisan butcher, they are given three days to relax and get used to the butcher. Only then are they slaughtered. By this time they have become habituated and unstressed – and you can really taste that in the beef.

Buyacow.uk connects you to your local, ethical farmers who rear grass-fed cattle with no hormones, chemicals or preventative antibiotics. These in turn produce healthy, premium grade beef that is rich in antioxidants, vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids.
You can buy a ‘share’ of a cow from a farmer & breed of your choice and once all its remaining shares are sold, your share will be butchered, matured and delivered to your door in a meat-box.
Our model helps you trace exactly where the meat you eat comes from, and ensures it is environmentally sustainable as no parts of the cow are wasted. Cutting out the supermarket also means you pay less for premium meat, while helping small-scale farmers earn more!

Once 100% crowd-purchased, your cow is then transported to an artisan butcher where its meat is matured for 2 weeks in order to develop its premium texture and flavour.
The meat is then cut and prepared into beautiful steaks, slices and mince products, and finally boxed using fully recyclable & biodegradable wool fibre cartons.
We'll 'moo-ve' your meat by refrigerated van directly to your doorstep, at no extra cost. Please note, we currently only deliver throughout England and not (yet) the wider UK.
What’s your beef? The number on your meat box matches the ‘ear tag’ number of your cow, so you can tell exactly where your meat comes from.
No nasty surprises. We only sell prime British beef that’s 100% natural – we don’t add sugar, binding agents, dyes, preservatives or artificial additives.
