Based in Sidbury, Alan has spent over a decade watching over Home Farm in Somerset. Besides his impressive herd of 700 Ewes, his pride and joy is the impressive herd of Organic American Stabilizers that he rears.
Stabilizers, though recognised as a pedigree breed in their own right, are actually a carefully bred mix of four older breeds — Simmental, Red Angus, Hereford and Gelbvieh — combining the fleshing ability, marbling, and moderate-size of the British breeds with the muscle, milk, and growth of continental breeds.
It also turns out that Alan is a sheep shearing maestro! Having competed internationally for the last 30 years of his life, Alan’s crowning moment was winning Bronze at the World Championships! Whatever time Alan gets outside his farm, he spends it hosting shearing masterclasses across the globe and shearing for charity — the week before we visited his farm he sheared 450 sheep in 8 hours! Not to baaaaaaaaaaad!
