Our farmer & his farm
Rob Cotton's farm is a diverse agricultural business based on the Devon Coast. This beautiful family run business has been in operation since 1991, although farming has been in the family for generations. Rob is responsible for around 1,800 acres of arable cropping, 450 head of cattle and 1,000 sheep.
Rob is committed to farming in a sustainable and environmentally sensitive way. He is focused on improving the soils and the wider environment in order to ensure that he passes on a thriving business to future generations.
Originally founded by Richard and Patricia Cotton, their two sons Matt and Rob have now joined the family business. Both Matt and Rob obtained Bsc (Hons) degrees from Harper Adams in Agriculture, and now live on the farm with their own families.
Over 90% of the land managed by Rob & Matt has a Higher Level Stewardship Scheme associated with it. As a large proportion of this land has been designated as having a high level of environmental significance, farming in harmony with their surroundings is a primary priority of the business.
Rob undertakes a wide range of environmental options such as non-inversion tillage over scheduled monuments, buffer strips next to water courses and managing woodland edges.
The farm spreads approximately 5,000 tonnes of composted green waste material each year which is made up of grass clippings and mulch. This helps to raise the organic matter of the sandy Devon soils.
Producing great beef has always been a focus for Rob & Matt. "We are proud to produce 'well bred-grass fed' South Devon beef from our own suckler herd." This beef is sold at local restaurants less than 3 miles from the farm, and now on Buyacow.uk!
